CCAT History[[Center for Appropriate Technology]
In 1978, a small group of dedicated students saved the dilapidated Buck house on [Humboldt State University] campus from being demolished. With the support of HSU faculty and the community, the students began to remodel the house and use the house to experiment with appropriate technologies. In the summer of ’79 we acquired the house, remodeled and moved in, and in 1980 we became an A.S. program known as the Campus Center for Appropriate Technology (CCAT). Over the years, the center incorporated a photovoltaic system, solar thermal system, greywater marsh, wind turbine, natural buildings, permaculture design, organic gardening, pedal power machines, and much much more.

"We are dedicated to sustainable and strive to show that treading lightly on the earth is both practical and rewarding. We collect and share information on appropriate technology in a residential, while providing hands on learning opportunities(CCAT House)."
What is Appropriate Technology? [[1]] Its deemed appropriate when it balances the environment, social, and economic needs of a community.Appropriate Technology (AT) describes a way of providing for human needs with the least impact on the Earth’s finite resources. When determining if a technology is appropriate for a specific use, we at CCAT examine a number of issues: is the technology built locally or use local materials? Can it be built, or at least maintained, with a minimum of specialized training? Is its use sustainable over many generations? Does it cause suffering in its manufacturing or use, human or otherwise, disproportionate to its benefits? Can we financially afford it? With answers to these questions, or at least predictions, we try to balance the benefits and harms of a technology to determine if it is appropriate.
What really defines the CCAT House? The Campus Center for Appropriate Technology is a live-in demonstration home and educational center for appropriate technology and resource conservation. CCAT is a registered non-profit organization and home for three students who live in the house and direct the program for one-year periods. We are located on the Humboldt State University [[2]] Campus in Arcata, California. Motivated by an ethic of “education by example,” CCAT offers tours, workshops, and opportunities for hands-on involvement to university students and the general public. Approximately eighteen part-time student employees keep operations going. We are a student-funded, student run organization.

Bayside park farm spring internship [[6]]
Everyone is interested in some kind of productive work that pays off in the long run. Go ahead and give time to make your resume better by getting involved with the Bayside Park Farm. An internship is an outstanding way to gain experience in the workforce.
The Campus Center for Appropriate Technology (CCAT) is a student run sustainability organization located at Humboldt State University. CCAT has partnered with Appropedia to bring over 30 years of student based appropriate technology solutions to the world. Please see the pages categorized below.
Mission
The mission of CCAT "is to demonstrate appropriate technology in a residential setting, to provide hands-on experiential learning opportunities to Humboldt State University and the surrounding community, to collect and disseminate information about appropriate technology, to examine the ethical and social consequences of technology, and to dispel the myth that living lightly on the earth is difficult or burdensome. CCAT is dedicated to sustainability and seeks to help others live likewise."
