Weird little - Error! is not a number.[edit | edit source]

On the page CCAT Small Pond Revitalization there appear two little warnings near the top of the page. The errors appear as orange exclamation marks and their hovertext is ""Error!" is not a number." Does anyone know what this is from? --Lonny (talk) 19:04, 7 March 2022 (UTC)

@Lonny Fixed! The error was because we're getting the pageview data once a month from Google Analytics and it seems the script that does so failed for some pages. You'll notice that the "impact" field has dissappeared now. It'll appear again once the script re-runs. Cheers! Sophivorus (talk) 19:32, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
Got it. Thank you! Lonny (talk) 08:19, 13 March 2022 (UTC)
thanks for fixing that!! Sm-neutron (talk) 21:42, 23 June 2022 (UTC)

Page data[edit | edit source]

Why does the template sometimes provide and impact value and sometimes not? --Joshua Pearce (talk) 19:38, 9 March 2022 (UTC)

@J.M.Pearce Hi! The bug is temporary. The data gets updated once a month but this month there were a few errors so some pages aren't displaying their impact. I already fixed the cause of the error and I'll try to re-run the script before the end of the month, cheers! Sophivorus (talk) 21:44, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
Thanks! Joshua Pearce (talk) 14:56, 17 March 2022 (UTC)

Automatic translations[edit | edit source]

Hi all! I developed a script that is able to translate any wiki page to any language using Google Translate. These translations will be indexed by search engines, making them discoverable by users that search in other languages. This script has the potential to multiply the size, reach and impact of Appropedia! Check out Appropedia:Translations to add your favorite pages to the translation queue! Category:Appropedia[edit | edit source]

Hi again! I've done some organization, merging, updates and improvements to pages and categories at Category:Appropedia. Crucially, I archived a lot of pages that haven't changed since 2008-2010 at the new Category:Appropedia archive. The strategy is to archive old pages so that current pages stay visible and updated. This strategy has the great advantage of being sustainable: it's easy to understand and implement, so we can all do it (see Template:Archive). Cheers! Sophivorus (talk) 15:16, 10 May 2022 (UTC)

Form for literature reviews[edit | edit source]

@Lonny, J.M.Pearce, Emilio Hi! Following Emilio's suggestion, I created Example literature review to demonstrate the possibilities of the new Template:Form to organize, structure and ease the creation of literature reviews. Check it out! Of course the form, templates and page structure can be modified to suit your needs, and I've devoted some time to the documentation of Template:Form so that you can experiment yourselves, but let me know if you'd like some extra functionality like a new field type or if I can help further. Hope it helps, cheers! Sophivorus (talk) 13:52, 26 May 2022 (UTC)

Advice for my first photovoltaic system[edit | edit source]

@Lonny, J.M.Pearce Hi! After reading To Catch the Sun, I want to buy my first photovoltaic system (panels, battery, charge controller, inverter, etc).

My immediate goal is to learn, reduce my carbon footprint, and power a few devices "through the window" (that is, I don't want to tap the houses' electric system because I'm only renting this place until the end of the year). Devices would be my laptop, phone, wifi, TV, a few lamps, and perhaps a washing machine, if the system suffices. However, in the future, I'd like to be able to scale up the system so that I can power my house (when I build it) so I'm investing in an "oversized" charge controller and inverter.

With this in mind, I've been reading and researching some options at my local online marketplace and here is my current setup:

This is my first attempt at building a photovoltaic system and I don't have much background in electricity either, so I'm not very confident. For example, I only recently learned there's a difference between PWM and MPPT controllers and between pure and modified wave inverters, so I worry I may still be missing something important. Do you see any red flags or possible issues I should be aware? Thanks for any advice!! Sophivorus (talk) 21:51, 13 June 2022 (UTC)

Well, I ended up buying the parts mentioned above except that I got this lead acid battery instead of the lithium ion one. Will share the results when I set it up and hopefully make some Appropedia article about it. Cheers! Sophivorus (talk) 19:09, 27 June 2022 (UTC)

Empowerment Technologies[edit | edit source]

Learning experiences

Empowerment Technology or ICT is a subject or a lesson to all students specially me.

If you don't know how to understand this subject, it will be difficult. Some people find it challenging to complete all of the ICT tasks or projects. However, as a student, you have a responsibility to all ICT students.

As a student, I am learning a lot about ICT, particularly computers and accounting. We didn't use computers last school year, in short, we didn't have a computer subject, so it's not easy, but if you understand it correctly, it can assist you a lot. I've learnt how to use Microsoft Web, Excel, and even other websites like Piktochart, Change .org, and the one I'm currently using, WordPress. With all of the ICT classes, I can apply it to all of my other projects and use it in my daily life.

ICT, or information and communication technology, can help us comprehend computers, their worth, and what they can do for us. It could be for the better or for the worse, but we should do the correct way since we study and grasp the teachings and values in ICT.

How to list external links[edit | edit source]

Hi! I am editing some pages and I'd like to ask for opinions on how to list external links: Before or after references? I wonder which option could be more useful or make more sense.

See examples here:

Thanks --Irene92 (talk) 00:18, 19 July 2022 (UTC)

Hi @Irene92, I'd go for the Aquaponics version, simply because the external links tend to be a little more readable than the refs. Philralph (talk) 12:53, 19 July 2022 (UTC)
@Irene92 I second the Aquaponics version (references after external links). It seems Wikipedia favors the alternative, apparently because they consider external links shouldn't be part of the article. However I think external links should be considered part of Appropedia pages, so again, I favor references after external links. Sophivorus (talk) 12:26, 27 July 2022 (UTC)

Event templates, proposal and request[edit | edit source]

This is mainly something to help with CASwiki pages but might be of interest beyond.

Hi @Sophivorus, I'd like to propose / request a couple of Event templates, similar to the fabulously useful News templates. Similar to those it'd be super useful to be able to use an eventslist type template to display relevant events for localities and (community action, sustainability, etc) topics.

I've redrafted some of the content of International community action events and UK community action events to show how they might display.

So similar to news template, an events template with parameters:

  • Date
  • day or days of the week if applicable (some a whole month, year or decade) - could be automated?
  • (wiki) page link, (red if no article)
  • link (url)
  • source with url as default (only displays if no article)
  • text
  • location
  • keywords

What do you think? Cheers, Philralph (talk) 13:16, 19 July 2022 (UTC)

@Philralph Hi! I'm glad you're finding the news templates useful! I just created Template:Event and Template:Eventlist following your specifications and defined a few example events at International community action events#July and UK community action events#July, check it out! A few notes:
  1. I wasn't quite able to add support for multiple dates, so you'll have to pick one date per event for now. However, I was able to include a date-text parameter to control the visible text of the date. You can use that to communicate date ranges. If I figure out how to improve this I will, but I think it's a good start.
  2. I added support for multiple locations (see the template documentation) and copied the solution to Template:News.
  3. I didn't quite understand what you meant when you said that the source should only display if there's no article. Could you clarify that?
I really hope this new template becomes useful. Let me know of any bugs or further requests! Sophivorus (talk) 14:56, 27 July 2022 (UTC)
@Sophivorus , Hi! Thanks very much for this! Looking forward to testing them out.
  • I imagine we'll still need a separate text parameter, see for example UK_community_action_events#October (2nd event listed), text needs to come after internal link, and before source. Maybe also should be some kind of limit, e.g. on number of words perhaps?
  • re the source, thinking about it, maybe it's fine if it (plus the url) is just optional (as if there's an article that'll include the source). So no need for it to display, but if wanted it can be put in and displayed, and that's fine as well. Hope that makes a bit more sense now!
Philralph (talk) 15:44, 28 July 2022 (UTC)
@Philralph Hi! I just added the "text" parameter. Regarding the source, does it work ok now? Or does it need some adjustment? Cheers! Sophivorus (talk) 14:45, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
@Sophivorus thanks for that! Yes source ok, no adjustment needed. Could Template:Eventlist display events in chronological order, and so consistent with eg UK community action events? At present displaying in reverse of that, eg see Community action UK#Coming up. Thanks, Philralph (talk) 12:08, 10 August 2022 (UTC)
@Philralph Done, cheers! Sophivorus (talk) 13:22, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

Available for collaboration[edit | edit source]

Hello, sorry I have not been active for a couple of years. Just wanted to say Hi again, and offer collaboration on any topics related to natural building and forest gardening, etc. Moribund (talk) 16:09, 5 August 2022 (UTC)

Citizen Action Networks near you, map[edit | edit source]

Hi @Sophivorus, I've set up a map on Citizen Action Networks near you, using your Community gardens map as a model. Does it all look OK? Will the form work OK or does anything else need to be set up? Thanks, Philralph (talk) 09:27, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

@Philralph I tested it and looked at the code and everything seems fine, well done! Sophivorus (talk) 13:25, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
