It is a combination I think of it being a topic that is interesting to the greatest number of people (e.g. normal everyday people not into sustainability, etc.) , the few press releases we did with it - and continuous promoting of it. 1. It is a full donation?

Donations are not subject to institutional overhead; therefore, you would have access to all $100,000 for the direct costs of your research. However, please note that these funds cannot be used for leveraging with other organizations (NSERC, Mitacs, OCI, etc.).

1. If it is a research contract?

Research contracts are subject to 40% overhead. In this case, you would have $71,428.57 (= $100,000/1.40) available for the direct costs of your research.

1. If we couple with Mitacs?

Cash from the company will be matched by Mitacs 1:1 and 13% HST will charged to the company by Mitacs. In this case, there are two options:

Option 1 (Industry partner can afford HST on top of the $100k)

In this case the industry provides $100,000 in cash and Mitacs matches the funds with $100,000 for a total of $200,000 total award. In this case, the company will be charged $13,000 (or 13% of the $100,000 cash contribution from the company).

Option 2 (Industry partner can only afford to contribute $100k)

In this case, we must account for the 13% HST that the company will have to pay Mitacs up front. This means there will be $88, 495.58 (= $100,000/1.13) available to be matched by Mitacs. At a 1:1 match, there will be $176.991.15 total award.

Please note that, for both Options 1 and 2, each internship unit (IU) costs $15,000 out of the total award.  Therefore, for Option 1 you can get ~13 IUs whereas you can only get ~11 IUs for Option 2. There will be a balance left over for both Option 1 and 2.

1. If we couple with OCI?

Company funds for OCI-C2C are subject to 40% overhead and has a 1(company cash):1(company in-kind):2(OCI cash) matching schema. As noted above, you would start with $71,428.57 (= $100,000/1.40) cash from the company to match and an equal amount of company in-kind contribution. OCI would then match the company cash and in-kind amounts with $142,857.14 for a total award of $285,714.28 (company in-kind = $71,428.57, cash from company and OCI = $214,285.71.

1. If we couple with NSERC?

Partner funds for NSERC Alliance Advantage grants are subject to 40% overhead and are a 1:2 match. In this case, we again start with $71,428.57 (= $100,000/1.40) as the cash contribution from the company, NSERC’s match will be $142,857.14 for a total of award of $214,285.71.

1. If we couple with OCI+mitacs? There is no current joint program between these two organizations.

1. If we couple with NSERC+mitacs?

In this case, only the 13% HST will be charged by Mitacs. Again, there are two options and the same IU rules apply:

Option 1 (Industry partner can afford HST on top of the $100k)

In this case the industry provides $100,000 in cash and Mitacs matches the funds with $100,000 (1:1) for a total of $200,000. NSERC will kick in $200,000 (2:1 match of the original $100,000 from company). The total award will then be $400,000. In this case, the company will be charged $13,000 (or 13% of their original $100,000 cash contribution).

Option 2 (Industry partner can only afford $100k)

In this case, we must account for the 13% HST that the company will have to pay Mitacs up front. This means there will be $88, 495.58 (= $100,000/1.13) available to be matched by both Mitacs and NSERC. Company cash ($88, 495.58), Mitacs match ($88, 495.58), and NSERC match ($176,991.16) sum to a total award of $353,982.32.

1. Is it possible to do NSERC+OCI+mitacs? Not an option but see NSERC+OCI below.

1. Are there any other options?

There is an option for a NSERC Alliance Advantage +OCI-C2C partnered project. However, in the C2C overview there are project/expense caps as follows: “Up to $30,000 from NSERC Alliance, up to $30,000 from OCI C2C and minimum $30,000 from the industry partner (minimum 50% must be spent at the academic institution)”.
