Food is any substance[1] consumed to provide nutritional support for the body. It is usually of plantW or animalW origin, and contains essential nutrients, such as carbohydratesW, fats, proteinsW, vitaminsW, or mineralsW. The substance is ingested by an organism and assimilated by the organism's cells in an effort to produce energy, maintain life, and/or stimulate growth.

Historically, people secured food through two methods: hunting and gatheringW, and agriculture. Today, most of the food energyW consumed by the world populationW is supplied by the food industryW, which is operated by multinational corporationsW that use intensive farmingW and industrial agricultureW to maximize system outputW.

Food safety and food security are monitored by agencies like the International Association for Food ProtectionW, World Resources InstituteW, World Food ProgrammeW, Food and Agriculture OrganizationW, and International Food Information CouncilW. They address issues such as sustainability, biological diversityW, climate change, nutritional economicsW, population growth, water supply, and access to food.

The right to foodW is a human rightW derived from the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural RightsW (ICESCR), recognizing the "right to an adequate standard of living, including adequate food", as well as the "fundamental right to be free from hunger".
