TissueDB/Materials/Ecoflex 00-30

From Appropedia

Ecoflex 00-30 is a two-part platinum-cure silicone rubber manufactured by Smooth-On, Inc. (Macungie, Pennsylvania, USA). Its Shore 00-30 hardness rating places it in the very soft, highly extensible range of silicones; it is mixed 1A:1B by weight or volume and cures to a translucent, flexible skin at room temperature. Its high tear strength and skin-like pliability make it suitable for use in medical simulation as a skin overlay, tissue phantom, or surface layer for anatomical models.

Tissues

Tissue Visual Tactile Simulator Notes
Skin and Subcutaneous Tissue (top skin layer) Yes Yes Brannan Chest Tube Simulator Per Brannan 2021: "the top skin layer was made of SmoothOn Ecoflex 00-30." Outer, trainee-facing layer of a three-layer silicone laminate that covers the 3D-printed ribcage. Layer thickness and pour depth not specified in source.[1]
Small Intestine Partial Partial Habti Bowel Anastomosis Simulator Single-layer silicone cast with surface mucosal texture for hand-sewn bowel anastomosis training. Clinicians confirmed the prototype was "representative of the small bowel anastomosis tissue, especially the replicated mucosae."[2]

Used In Simulators

Simulator Purpose Notes
Brannan Chest Tube Simulator Top (outer) layer of three-layer skin laminate Poured flat, cut to shape. Replaceable cut-out window uses the same triple-layer composition.
Habti Bowel Anastomosis Simulator Sole tissue-simulating material — cast in 3D-printed mold to form 30 cm small bowel segments Mixed 1A:1B, poured into mold, cured ~4 hours at room temperature. Each mold produces up to 4 segments. $8.00 CAD per segment (177 g).
