From Appropedia

The penis is the external male genital organ housing the penile (anterior) urethra, which serves as the conduit for urination and ejaculation. Its anatomical course curves from the perineal external urethral sphincter through the bulbous urethra and along the corpus spongiosum to the external urethral meatus at the glans. Accurate simulation of penile anatomy supports training in urinary catheterization, where the operator must guide a Foley catheter through approximately 17 to 20 cm of urethral length, negotiate the natural bulbomembranous angulation, and recognize the modest resistance of the external urethral sphincter prior to bladder entry. Tissue-simulating materials for the penis must reproduce skin elasticity, manipulability, and the deformability required for the catheter pass-through without compromising urethral lumen patency. Simulators that omit penile compliance risk training learners who under-appreciate the soft-tissue handling required during clinical catheterization.

Materials

Material Visual Tactile Simulator Notes
Smooth-On 00-30 platinum-cure silicone (Smooth-On, Inc., Easton, Pennsylvania), cast over a mould to produce the external genitalia (1; reusable) Urinary Catheterization Simulator (Gillis) External genitalia cast in Smooth-On 00-30 silicone provide a highly mobile external surface offering more realistic manipulation than the traditional model. The 00-30 Shore A durometer matches the soft-tissue compliance required for the operator to grip, retract, and angulate the penile shaft during catheter insertion. Specific cast geometry is not parameter-quantified in the source. Source: Gillis CJ, Bishop N, Walsh G, Harvey D 2020, Cureus 12(5):e8377. DOI 10.7759/cureus.8377. PMID 32626621. PMC PMC7328704.
