Uses of open-licensed content[edit | edit source]

Open licensed content (images, video, books, hardware designs) may be added to Appropedia as support other pages, or as standalone content such as pages ported from other sources as long as they are shared with a compatible license.

As there are many ways to find this content, note that these are just some tools to guide you as you search for content.

Using the right license[edit | edit source]

You must check that the piece of content (not just the text on the page) is available, not only under an open license, but that this license is as much or more open than our standard license, Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike. This is a copyleft license that requires that all derivative content is shared with the same license to ensure that every contribution on Appropedia is kept available to anyone in the future.

Text and images on Appropedia must have permission to be used commercially as well. We encourage, for example, that businesses, nonprofits or educational institutions reuse and remix content on Appropedia, and even to make a profit off its content and derivatives (for example, by selling a book with translated content), as long as all the content generated is shared under the same license.

Sources of open-licensed content[edit | edit source]

Images[edit | edit source]

Images, similar to written texts, are subject to copyright. They, therefore, belong to someone unless they've been explicitly released by the author into the public domain. The images must be licensed for use directly by the copyright holder. Whenever possible, it is strongly preferable to use images in the public domain or licensed under the GFDL, rather than fair use ones.

There are several options:

Videos[edit | edit source]

Texts[edit | edit source]

Hardware[edit | edit source]

This refers to electronic and computer hardware that has been designed with the same policy as free and open-source software (FOSS). Free hardware is part of the open-source culture, which expands this ideology beyond the realm of software.

Uploading content correctly[edit | edit source]

Images, videos and text[edit | edit source]

Note, when uploading a file to Appropedia: Even if a file is public domain, you must:

  • choose a "Licensing" option,
  • include the source link in the summary,
  • add any other information as appropriate.
