Safety Training Requirements[edit | edit source]

Safety Issues With Method[edit | edit source]

No harmful material is involved in this experiment. However, the entire procedures are to be conducted inside a fume hood to ensure a healthy growth environment for the algae.

Personal protective equipment[edit | edit source]

  1. Rubber gloves - for handling and cleaning equipment

SDS and other[edit | edit source]

Knowing what chemicals are in the lab and how they interact with each other is critical when accidents happen.

  1. Appropriate SDS sheets should be viewed online.
  2. Note the hazards listed on the door to the lab. If you introduce any new equipment or materials you must clear them with the responsible person listed on the lab door. If the responsible person is out of date, contact the departmental administrators to get it updated.

Equipment Name[edit | edit source]

  1. TEB #28 for main experiment, TEB #14 where materials are prepared
  2. Mini-controller Raspberry Pi (BreadPi); PC
  3. Photo-bioreactor
  4. PH probe
  5. Thermocouple
  6. Turbidity sensor
  7. Plant grow light
  8. Stir motor
  9. Dissolved oxygen probe
  10. Flasks
  11. Air pump
  12. Pipes
  13. Documentation for STL and BREAD...
  14. vendor location and contact info
  15. Equipment specifications

Calibration & Tolerances[edit | edit source]

Equipment that requires calibrationː PH probe, Turbidity sensor, Thermocouple, Dissolved oxygen probe

Operation & Procedure[edit | edit source]

  1. Sterilize all equipment other than electronics with alcohol (70 percent or higher), and leave them under UV light overnight inside the fume hood
  2. Prepare BBM (total of 6.6 Liters including DI water and BBM)
  3. Autoclave BBM containers under 400 Celsius for 20 mins and let them cool down to room temperature
  4. Pour all liquid into the reactor jar
  5. Install all parts on photo-bioreactor per experiment design
  6. Connect air pump, stir machines (set to desired speed), finally turn on the grow light
  7. Let the algae grows itself and clean the turbidity sensor daily to ensure accurate readings

Shutdown[edit | edit source]

  1. Turn off the grow light, all the pumps, and the stirring motor
  2. Since no harmful chemicals are involved, simply dump the content of the reactor into a drain (beware of clogging the drainage)
  3. clean the glass jar for future experiments to avoid cross contamination
