Peritoneum and serosa are thin, transparent membranes lining the abdominal cavity and covering abdominal organs, simulated to train delicate handling and safe peritoneal entry techniques.
Materials
| Material | Visual | Tactile | Simulator | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plastic Film | Trocar Placement Trainer, Appendectomy Simulator, Laparoscopic Ectopic Pregnancy Simulator, Open Appendectomy Simulator (Matthews), Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernia Repair Simulator (Kurashima) | Thin transparent peritoneal membrane | ||
| Fabric | Partial | Partial | Intra-abdominal Bleeding Simulator (Fernandes) | Semitransparent waterproof fabric membrane isolating peritoneal cavity from retroperitoneum; allows visual identification of underlying structures[1] |
| Latex + Plastic Film | Partial | No | Medeiros Abdominal Wall Defect Simulator | Omphalocele model only. Yellow cellophane (plastic film) forms the peritoneal sac covering the herniated viscera; the source names only the cellophane in that role, and the female condom (latex) as part of the sac is an unconfirmed best attempt. The gastroschisis model intentionally omits this layer.[2] |
| Masking tape + Contact adhesive paper | Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernioplasty TAPP 3D Simulator (Pires de Melo Filho) | Masking tape layered with Contact adhesive paper covers the entire internal model surface corresponding to the abdominal cavity. Allows anatomical structures to remain visible through transparency, enabling Stage 1 (peritoneum opening) and Stage 5 (peritoneum closure) maneuvers. | Non-lubricated condom | Pediatric Inguinal Hernia Repair Simulator (Heo) | Serves as the hernia sac in each modular cartridge. Membrane characteristics and global availability drove material selection; latex finger cots and plastic kitchen wrap were rejected during iteration. | Ioban™ 6648 self-adhesive plastic field | Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernia Repair Simulator (Hanssen) | Self-adhesive plastic field (Ioban™ 6648, 3M®, St. Paul, MN, USA) applied over the entire assembled hernia model to allow realistic dissection of the pre-peritoneal space without bleeding artefact. | Transparent surgical glove | Pediatric Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernia Repair Simulator (Duboureau) | Second (transparent) surgical glove placed over the assembled bottle-funnel structure with fingers cut a few centimetres below the bottle neck. The transparent material supports visual dissection planes during simulated repair. Source: Duboureau H et al. 2021, J Pediatr Surg 56(4):674–677. DOI 10.1016/j.jpedsurg.2020.05.044. | Gelatin-Glycerol Gel | Patent Ductus Arteriosus Ligation Simulator | Parietal pleura cast as part of the gelatin-glycerol PDA model; trainees dissect it off the aorta to expose the PDA before ligation. | ||

| Disposable shower cap, red-dyed fluid | - | - | Emergency Department Thoracotomy Simulator (Misra) | A disposable shower cap filled with red-dyed fluid, tied to the heart model to mimic the tamponade-filled pericardial sac; incised during pericardiotomy (Misra et al. 2024). |
| Gaffer Tape over cellophane (Plastic Film) | – | – | Chest Tube Insertion Simulator (Man-O-War) | Gaffer tape moulded over cellophane along the intercostal spaces, mimicking the parietal pleura (the trainer's pleura row resolves to this class).
