TissueDB/Materials/Gauze
Gauze is a light, open-weave cotton (or synthetic) fabric. In surgical simulation it is used less as a tissue in its own right than as a forming substrate and a consumable: wrapped around foam or shaped into cones and then coated with a skin material such as plastisol, it gives mock organs their body; loosely packed, it bulks glove-based organs as an alternative to cotton; and as ordinary surgical gauze it is consumed during haemorrhage-control practice.
Tissues
| Tissue | Visual | Tactile | Simulator | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lung | Emergency Department Thoracotomy Simulator (Misra) | Gauze wrapped around a soft-foam core and plastisol-coated to give lung-like bulk — the visualisation target on chest entry (Misra et al. 2024). | ||
| Heart | Emergency Department Thoracotomy Simulator (Misra) | Gauze shaped into a cone and plastisol-coated to form the heart — the pericardiotomy target (Misra et al. 2024). | ||
| Aorta | Emergency Department Thoracotomy Simulator (Misra) | Gauze cone, plastisol-coated, for the descending aorta — the cross-clamp target (Misra et al. 2024). | ||
| Esophagus | Emergency Department Thoracotomy Simulator (Misra) | Gauze, plastisol-coated, with a nasogastric tube inside so the resident can tell it from the adjacent aorta by palpation (Misra et al. 2024). |

Overview
[edit source]Bought cheaply as ordinary surgical gauze from a pharmacy or medical supplier. In the documented builds it is (a) wrapped or coned as a shaping layer under a plastisol coat (Misra thoracotomy trainer), (b) an interchangeable alternative to cotton for loosely bulking the cecum and layering the mesoappendix (ALL-SAFE appendicitis model), and (c) a single-use haemorrhage-control consumable (Fernandes bleeding trainer).
