The lung is a spongy, air-filled respiratory organ located in the thoracic cavity. Each lung has a distinctive pink-grey colour and soft, compressible texture with a smooth pleural surface.

Materials

Material Visual Tactile Simulator Notes
Polyurethane Foam (substrate) plus liquid plastisol (Bait Plastics LLC) coating over pink-coloured gauze wrap Emergency Department Thoracotomy Simulator (Misra) Soft packing-foam block (16 in × 10 in × 4 in / 40.6 cm × 25.4 cm × 10.2 cm) handcrafted into lung shape, wrapped in pink gauze, then coated with medium-density liquid plastisol. Single left lung only, consistent with the anterolateral left thoracotomy approach.[1]
Laerdal airway management trainer lungs (proprietary; removed during build phase 1 and replaced in build phase 5) SALAD Simulator (Kumar) Manikin lungs are removed during build phase 1 to provide access to the stomach for tube insertion, then replaced in build phase 5 to restore the trainer's standard airway management configuration.[2]
Iron-wire-plus-paper-mache scaffold (no tactile fidelity) Yes No Bronchoscopy Anatomical Trainer (Di Domenico) Right middle lobe (segments 4, 5), right lower lobe (segments 6 to 10), and left upper / left lower lobes (with segment 6) are anatomically referenced in the model's Figure 2 endoscopic-view correspondence panels. Balloon (punching balloons) Chest Tube Simulator (Brannan) Two punching-balloon "lungs" form the inflatable air cavity; create the pneumothorax analogue the trainee decompresses during tube thoracostomy.[3]
