Brace for the treating of infants with club foot[edit]

Project developed by [Wes Gratz]
This OSAT has been designed but not yet tested - use at own risk.

Reindeer Husbandry Applications require use of snowmobiles to get around in the tundra like conditions of Russia. Hand guards are often used in snowmobiling to protect the hands against wind, snow, and tree branches. However, these guards can be used in other instances as well. Such as dirt bikes, ATV's, and bicycles.

3D printing can help create products for areas where products are hard to ship, deliver, or manufacture. These hand guards are designed to be easily printable and easily replaceble if parts are broken in extreme circumstances.

A 3D printable set of handguards and mounts that can be adjusted or changed through the OS software to fit any custom needs.

These are currently designed to fit a 1" handlebars which are pretty common.

Bill of Materials[edit]

  1. PLA plastic filament (This design is completely 3D printable

Tools needed for fabrication of the OSAT[edit]

  1. MOST Delta RepRap or similar RepRap 3-D printer

Skills and Knowledge Necessary to Make the OSAT[edit]

Print Instructions[edit]

For all printed components

Material: PLA

Layer Height: 0.2mm

Shell Thickness: 1mm

Fill Density: 70%

Print Speed: 60 mm/s

Printing Temperature: 210 C

No supports necessary.

Total Printing Time: 12 hours

Assembly time: >5min

Assembly Instructions[edit]

Using the .stl files above print out the following

  1. 1 x Throttle Mount
  2. 1 x Brakeside Mount
  3. 1 x Throttle Side Guard
  4. 1 x Brake Side Guard
  5. 2 x Clamp
  6. 2 x angle bracket

Common Problems and Solutions[edit]

  1. Be sure to clean the supports out of the hand guards
  2. Print the handguards on the front of the guards to use less material and decrease print time

Cost savings[edit]

Break Down of Costs[edit]

(Assuming $15/kg of PLA)

  1. Guard (2x):$2.91
  2. Clamp (2x):$0.18
  3. Bar bracket (2x):$0.57

-Total Print cost: $3.19

-Hardware cost: >$0

Total cost to Manufacture: >$3.19

Comparable Costs[edit]

Commercially Available Braces: $75.00

Savings: $71.81 (~ 95.7% reduction in cost)
