Yarn (thread, embroidery floss, twine) is synthetic or natural fiber used in surgical simulation to represent linear structures such as blood vessels, for vascular anastomosis and knot-tying training.
Tissues
| Tissue | Visual | Tactile | Simulator | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Appendiceal Artery | Appendectomy Simulator, Acute Appendicitis Simulator, Open Appendectomy Simulator (Matthews) | Yarn represents the appendiceal artery as a ligation target; in one build (Appendectomy Simulator) it is also used for bipolar cautery practice. | ||
| Mesoappendix (red yarn within scrub-cap) | Open Appendectomy Simulator (Matthews) | Red yarn wrapped in scrub-cap material forms the mesoappendix. |
Alternatives
- Silicone tubing — Realistic vessel wall thickness; higher cost; more complex setup.
- Non-sterile suture — Most realistic texture for suture manipulation training; higher cost per session.
- Felt — Fascial plane simulation; not suitable for vascular anastomosis training.
