Project Description[edit | edit source]

Our team decided to create PCB utility tool. It encompasses a vise and many other tools that allow for PCB designing and troubleshooting easier. The vise has many attachments that can be used with or as a stand alone item. The link can be found at PCB Utility Tool NIH

Attachments:

  • Vise
  • Magnetic Head
  • Magnifying Glass
  • Light
  • Alligator Clips

Testing[edit | edit source]

  • The maximum width a PCB can be is 17cm.
  • For 3 joints in series the maximum weight it can support without losing shape is approximately 12 ounces.

Additional Materials Needed[edit | edit source]

  • 2 small screws (for the magnetic attachment)
  • 2 sets of bolts with wing nuts (used to tension the vise arms)
  • A small magnet with a counter bore
  • Alligator Clips
  • Flashlight
  • Magnifying Glass Lens
  • Metal Hose Clap

Printing Directions[edit | edit source]

  • All items were printed with 1.75mm PLA
  • The light and magnifying glass will need support
  • When printing the ball joints make sure to change the minimum

time on a layer to at least 10 seconds to stop warping of the ball

Assembly Instructions[edit | edit source]

  • When assembling ball joints you need to smooth out the inner diameter then

take a mallet and lightly tap the next joint in place

  • for the magnetic head a small screw is needed to attach the magnet
  • for the vice two sets of screws and wingnuts are needed to attach

the arms of the vice

Cost[edit | edit source]

Item Quantity Grams Per One Total Grams Price
Base 1 112 112 $2.464
Joint 10 5 50 $1.10
3 to 1 Splitter 1 17 17 $.374
Magnifying Glass Attachment 1 14 14 $.308
Magnet Head Attachment 1 3 3 $.066
Alligator Clip Attachment 2 2 4 $.088
Flashlight Attachment 1 25 25 $.55
Vise Main 1 25 25 $.55
Vise Arm 2 17 34 $.748
  • based on $.022 per gram

A Panavise model 201 costs 30 dollars on Amazon. For just the bass and the vise the cost is $3.76. This is roughly 12.5% of the original cost.
