When suctioning a neonate just after birth, a bulb suction device is often utilized. To use, depress the bulb before placing it into the neonate's mouth or nostril. Release the bulb to suction, move the device and press the bulb to evacuate the device away from yourself or the patient. Start with the mouth and move to either nostril.

If using a commercial portable suction device with an adjustable suction pressure, the suction pressure for neonates should be set between 80 and 100 mmHg.
