Why did you let your dog off-leash in Kananaskis?
This study surveyed visitors in Kananaskis, Spray, and Bow Valleys to understand why people allow their dogs off-leash in provincial parks. Building on past research, including a 2000 Kananaskis study, it examined factors influencing off-leash behavior. Conducted from August to November 2023, the survey gathered data on trail use, dog activity, reasons for off-leash choices, trail experience, and bear encounters.
The research aimed to assess visitors’ dog control, adherence to social norms, and beliefs about leash rules to help land managers promote responsible recreation and positive social and environmental outcomes. It also explored visitor preferences, use patterns, and psychological factors affecting leash behavior. Further details are in the full report.
