About Me

[edit | edit source]

Hana Darvishi was born on July 2, 1996, in Iran. She grew up on a farm in Kurdistan, where she gained firsthand knowledge of rural life, agriculture, and the relationship between communities and the land. These early experiences inspired her interest in sustainable development, rural tourism, and community-based projects.

She earned her Bachelor of Science in Geography from the University of Razi, Kermanshah, Iran, and continued her studies at the University of Tehran, Iran’s most prestigious university, where she completed her Master of Science in Geography and Rural Planning with a GPA of 4.0/4, graduating first in her class. During her studies, she gained extensive knowledge of rural areas, agriculture, and planning for sustainable development, and acquired practical experience in rural tourism, including fieldwork and community engagement projects.

Currently, Hana is a Ph.D. student in Tourism Studies at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. Her research focuses on agritourism, regenerative agritourism, and asset mapping, examining how agritourism can support rural community development, climate resilience, and income diversification for farmers, and how various tangible and intangible assets contribute to its successful development. She has experience as a research assistant, analyzing quantitative and spatial data using SPSS and ArcGIS, contributing to research discussions, and presenting findings to academic and professional audiences.

Hana is fluent in Kurdish, Persian, and English, and skilled in GIS, statistical analysis, fieldwork, and university-level teaching. As a teaching assistant, she has led seminars, graded assignments and exams, and mentored students. She has received several awards for research, leadership, and professional development, including the People’s Choice Best Presentation Award at ReCon XII, the Mitacs Accelerate Internship Award, and the International Graduate Scholarship in Leisure Studies.

She actively volunteers with organizations such as ReForest London, Prairie Urban Farm Edmonton, and the Campus Food Bank, reflecting her ongoing commitment to sustainability and community development.
