The Wheelchair Cushion is a two-part seating cushion designed to improve comfort

and support for wheelchair users during daily use. It consists of a lower, sponge-filled layer and an upper, polyester-filled layer, which can be used together or separately depending on the level of support needed.

The lower cushion is made from thick cotton fabric filled with sponge, cut to approximately 55 cm x 50 cm, sewn closed on three sides, turned right-side out, filled, and sewn shut. The upper cushion is made from softer cotton fabric filled with polyester, constructed using the same cut-sew-turn-fill-sew method. Fabrication uses a sewing machine, scissors, measuring tape, fabric marker, and utility knife.

In use, the sponge-filled cushion is placed on the wheelchair's seating area first, with the polyester-filled cushion placed on top, allowing users to combine firmer support with a softer top layer for comfort.

About the manuals

Field Ready develops manuals to support both the fabrication and safe use of its products. A maker manual provides step-by-step instructions for replicating the design, including materials, tools, and assembly guidance, so that makers in different locations can build the product accurately and consistently. A user manual, where applicable, explains how to properly set up, use, and maintain the product once it is built, helping ensure it performs safely and as intended for the end user. Together, these manuals make the design accessible to both fabricators and the people who ultimately rely on the product.
