1 A tourniquet is used to stop severe bleeding and does so by applying substantial pressure around the circumference of an extremity, ideally providing adequate tamponade to all of the blood vessels that the bleeding is stopped.

7 If the tourniquet is to be left on for a prolonged period of time, it is recommended to periodically loosen the tourniquet and restore blood flow to the limb before re-tightening the tourniquet.


8 One of the most common complications of leaving a tourniquet on for a prolonged period of time is.

Gas gangrene.
Compartment syndrome.
Pulmonary embolus.
Coarctation of the aorta.

9 To finish applying the tourniquet you should

Check for loss of distal pulses.
Write the time of application on the tourniquet.
Check to see if the bleeding has completely stopped.
Secure the windlass so it does not release tension.

10 A triangular bandage may be used to create a tourniquet if a commercial tourniquet is not available.
