Empyema consists of purulent fluid, fibrinous debris, and inflammatory material accumulated within a body cavity, most commonly the pleural space.



  • Pleura — affected membrane in pleural empyema
  • Skin — thoracostomy access point
  • Muscle — intercostal musculature layers
  • Lung — visceral pleural surface adjacent to empyema
