TissueDB/Tissues/Pleural Effusion
Pleural effusion is an abnormal collection of fluid in the pleural space between the visceral and parietal pleura; in simulation it is the drainable fluid a trainee removes during thoracentesis.
Materials
| Material | Visual | Tactile | Simulator | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Intravenous fluid in an air-filled bag | - | - | Multipurpose Thoracic Simulator (Carter) | An intravenous-fluid bag made taut with injected air gives an air–fluid level; the trainee drains the fluid as the simulated effusion by Seldinger technique (Carter et al. 2010, J Surg Res 163(2):186–191). |
⚑ Open for review: whether Pleural Effusion is the parent class with Empyema (infected effusion) as a subtype is Dr Mohr's classification call.
