Intravenous fluid in an air-filled bag - - Multipurpose Thoracic Simulator (Carter) An intravenous-fluid bag made taut with injected air gives an air–fluid level; the trainee drains the fluid as the simulated effusion by Seldinger technique (Carter et al. 2010, J Surg Res 163(2):186–191).

  • Empyema — infected pleural effusion
  • Blood — haemothorax (blood in the pleural space)

⚑ Open for review: whether Pleural Effusion is the parent class with Empyema (infected effusion) as a subtype is Dr Mohr's classification call.
