TissueDB/Materials/Synthetic Skin Overlay
A synthetic skin overlay is a flexible, commercial elastomer skin laid over a manikin or model surface to give a realistic outer skin for landmark palpation and surface access. Unlike a flat synthetic skin pad used for suture and percutaneous practice, an overlay is shaped to cover a body region so that trainees feel the underlying structures through it. In the Pediatric Front-of-Neck Access Simulator (Kovatch), a synthetic skin overlay (the source used a One World DMG product) covers the neck over the embedded silicone airway, so the trainee palpates the thyroid cartilage, cricoid cartilage and cricothyroid membrane through the skin before performing needle cricothyroidotomy; the exact composition of the overlay is not stated in the source.[1]
