A synthetic skin pad or overlay is a purchased, multi-layered polymer sheet. It serves as a tissue-simulating material for percutaneous procedures, incision practice, suture training and landmark palpation. It reaches the bench in two forms. Both are the same class of bought rubbery skin, and they differ only in shape. The first is a flat pad, cut or clamped over a substrate for puncture and suturing. The second is a shaped overlay, laid over a manikin or model surface. Trainees feel the underlying structures through it. Documented flat-pad application: bronchoscopy-guided percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy (BG-PDT) training. That simulator mounts a 3-layered synthetic skin pad over an ex vivo bovine trachea. The pad is 15 × 30 cm and 6 mm thick (Training & Competence, Santiago, Chile). One pad supports up to 9 training iterations.[1] Documented overlay application: the Pediatric Front-of-Neck Access Simulator (Kovatch). There a synthetic skin overlay covers the neck over the embedded silicone airway. The trainee palpates the thyroid cartilage, cricoid cartilage and cricothyroid membrane through it before needle cricothyroidotomy. The source used a One World DMG product. The exact composition of the overlay is not stated in the source.[2] These pages document specific product references.
