Packing tape is a durable, semi-rigid adhesive film used in medical simulation to reproduce the tensile resistance and smooth surface of fascial layers. Its firmness, slight elasticity, and ability to adhere to underlying structures make it an effective low-cost substitute for fascia.

Tissues

Tissue Visual Tactile Simulator Notes
Fascia Yes Yes Trocar Placement Simulator Apply as continuous layer over sponge (adipose). Overlap edges 1–2 cm to increase tensile resistance; recreates "fascia pop" sensation.
Adipose Tissue (layer marker) Partial Placed between sponge and felt as landmark for suture closure.

Troubleshooting

  • Deep tissue simulation — Tape provides surface resistance only; no internal tissue planes.
  • Suturing practice — Tape tears under needle passage; use felt or silicone.
  • Energy device training — Melts and releases fumes with cautery; use silicone.

Alternatives

Alternative Best For Trade-offs
Felt Distinct "pop" sensation Less adherent to layers
Plastic Wrap Serosal simulation Less resistance
Silicone Reusable fascia simulation Higher cost
