Aluminum foil is a thin, pliable metallic sheet, available in standard and heavy-duty grades on rolls or as pre-cut sheets. It holds a moulded shape when pressed and folds into tubular or layered forms, though it creases and tears under repeated flexing. It is cut with scissors or torn by hand, and doubling layers increases stiffness. Sourced from any grocery or kitchen supplier. Can be used in medical simulation to form rigid or semi-rigid cavity shapes.

Tissues

Tissue Visual Tactile Recipe Simulator Notes
Soft tissue Mould and wrap to form a channel or cavity; double layers for added thickness. Holds a moulded shape and gives firm tactile resistance; creases and tears increase with repeated use.

Troubleshooting

  • Heavy manipulation procedures — creases and tears with force; does not withstand repeated instrument passage. Use silicone for high-volume trainers.
  • Soft tissue simulation — the rigid metallic surface does not deform or yield like soft tissue. Use silicone where tissue-like compliance is needed.
  • Procedures requiring elastic recoil — aluminum holds a rigid form and does not spring back. Use an elastic material such as silicone or latex where recoil is required.

Alternatives

Alternative Best For Trade-offs
Silicone Realistic tissue feel, reusable Higher cost, requires preparation
Plastic wrap Transparent membrane simulation Less structural rigidity, tears easily
Latex Flexible barrier simulation Allergenic; requires testing
