- The operations of the supermarket have a low environmental footprint.
Like regular supermarkets, sustainable supermarkets are a form of grocery store or self-service store offering a wide variety of food and household merchandise, organized into departments[verification needed].

- The amount of food waste should be minimized. Any food that nonetheless has gone bad, can be converted into biofuel to gain some extra revenue.  Alternatively, it can be composted or processed through a worm farm, or used as food for animals.
