Charity for Rural Community Development (CRUCDEV)/Peng Primary Health Post Cameroon

The Peng Primary Health Post is a rural community health infrastructure project being implemented by Charity for Rural Community Development (CRUCDEV) to improve access to basic healthcare for people living in Peng and surrounding communities in the South West Region of Cameroon.

The project was initiated in response to the difficulty rural residents face in accessing basic healthcare services. The health post is intended to provide a more accessible location for basic health consultations, health education, first aid, basic monitoring, and referral of patients requiring higher-level medical care.

CRUCDEV has worked with rural communities in the South West Region of Cameroon since its establishment in 2011.

The Peng community health-post initiative was developed in response to the identified need for improved local access to healthcare. Construction was subsequently initiated. However, progress was affected by limited financial resources, leaving the facility incomplete.

CRUCDEV has continued documenting the project while seeking partners and resources to complete the building, provide essential equipment, establish water provision, and obtain initial medicines and supplies.

In 2026, CRUCDEV began actively approaching potential partners to support the facility's completion and opening. One potential support package under discussion includes assistance toward completion of construction, basic medical equipment, a rainwater tank and initial medicines and supplies.

Peng is a rural community in the South West Region of Cameroon. Residents depend on available transport and roads to reach health facilities outside the immediate community.

Access to healthcare can be particularly difficult when people require urgent medical attention, when transport is unavailable, or when the cost of traveling to another health facility creates an additional burden.

The proposed health post is intended to bring basic healthcare services closer to the people while maintaining appropriate referral links with higher-level health facilities.

Here are some main issues this project could impact:

• Distance from some residents to existing health facilities.
• Transportation difficulties for people requiring medical attention.
• Cost and time associated with travelling for basic healthcare.
• Difficulty accessing basic health monitoring and first aid close to the community.
• Need for a local point for health education and referral.
• Limited rural infrastructure and services.

The health post is designed to complement, rather than replace, existing government and higher-level health services.

• Improve access to basic healthcare for people in Peng and surrounding communities.
• Provide an accessible location for basic consultations and health-related services.
• Establish a safe and appropriate building for rural healthcare delivery.
• Provide essential basic medical equipment and initial supplies.
• Establish an appropriate water and sanitation arrangement.
• Strengthen community participation in local health development.
• Establish a practical referral pathway for patients requiring more advanced medical care.
• Develop a sustainable rural health facility that can continue serving the community over time.

The project will be updated as additional construction, equipment, water, sanitation and operational milestones are achieved.

CRUCDEV is documenting every achievements and challenges. The purpose is not only to demonstrate what has been constructed, but also to record what worked, what did not work, the resources used, community participation, construction challenges, sustainability considerations and lessons that may be useful to other rural communities undertaking similar projects.
