This baby crib is a low-cost, field-fabricated design intended for use in disaster response and emergency shelter settings, as well as low-resource clinics and maternity wards. It is built primarily from PVC pipe, mesh, and plastic sheeting or cloth, materials that are widely available, inexpensive, and easy to source even in constrained supply environments.

The frame is constructed from PVC pipes, cut to size and joined by hand. clinic in a compact, portable form. Once installed at its point of use, the joints can be solvent-welded (glued) to permanently secure the structure for safety.

Mesh panels form the sides of the crib, providing ventilation and visibility while containing the infant safely within the frame. Plastic sheeting or cloth is used to complete the enclosure or line the sleeping surface, depending on the materials on hand.

This design supports rapid deployment in humanitarian settings where conventional cribs are unavailable, damaged, or too costly to source, while still allowing for durable, permanent setup once a location is confirmed.

Product development encompasses a number of concerns that are not always easily captured in saying that something is “ready.” Four separate readiness scales are listed for each item in this story along with a consideration of risk. The five categories are explained below along with the readiness scales on the following pages to provide users of this story with a clear understanding of how the system works.

Field readiness level:

  • This measures the degree in which an item is suitable for life-saving situations. It is a key quality that sets items apart in humanitarian contexts.

Maker readiness level:

  • This is an indication of the relative ease in making the item as it relates to the complication and skill involved.

User readiness level:

  • This is a measure of the end-users acceptability of the item considering issues such as whether it is already commonly used if the item is in an existing catalog and when there are established standards for its use.

Technology readiness level:

  • This is an indication of the development process that the item is in (e.g., whether it is at a conceptual stage or available for replication and widespread use). Risk level: This is a measure of severity and likelihood of the risk involved for the maker and end-user of the item. The mitigation and control measures are documented by Field Ready in separate risk assessments for each item it makes.

Risk Assessment

A risk assessment identifies the potential hazards associated with a product's materials,

construction, and intended use, and evaluates the likelihood and severity of harm each hazard could cause. For open-source hardware designed for humanitarian and field contexts, this document is essential because it gives makers, implementers, and end users a clear understanding of what could go wrong (structural failure, choking hazards, sharp edges, chemical exposure, and so on) and what steps have been taken to mitigate those risks. It supports safer replication of the design in the field and helps ensure that products are appropriate for vulnerable users, such as infants or patients in low-resource settings.

Test Plan

A test plan outlines the specific procedures used to verify that a product meets its intended performance, durability, and safety requirements before it is deployed or recommended for use. It typically describes what will be tested (e.g. load capacity, stability, material integrity), how the testing will be conducted, and the criteria for pass or fail. This document is essential because it provides evidence, rather than assumption, that a design performs as intended under realistic conditions.
