Sashana Shanmugarajah is a third year student pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology at Western University. Throughout her academic career, she has gained a passion for science, medicine, and research. She has gained a high interest, particularly in Genetics, Cell Biology, Animal Physiology, and Human Physiology and Pharmacology throughout her career. She believes that there is a connection between faculties throughout her experience by seeing research that combines both sciences and engineering. She also enjoys mathematics and has taken mathematics courses at Western for interest. She is greatly interested in the engineering field and finds interest in the hands-on projects her engineering colleges are doing with 3D printing. As a biology student, she values the importance of sustainability and is very interested in researching solutions for issues such as overconsumption of resources and high waste production. She believes using renewable energy such as sunlight is one of the significant steps to a sustainable future.
Sashana has been involved in extracurriculars since the beginning of her academic career by being part of her school’s yearbook committee for two consecutive years and gaining professional design and photography skills through this experience. She has also embraced her culture and was involved in her cultural associations during her school years. She has a strong passion for music and was part of her school band as a flute player and part of the guitar club. She now stays involved in Western’s community by partaking in the role of the director of communication for the Canadian Association of Regenerative Medicine. She gives back to her community by volunteering at a local doctor's clinic and helping patients acquire their healthcare needs alongside the physician. She volunteered at her youth community center to help plan a better future for her community by bringing out concerns and executing plans to address them. She has also worked as a tutor at Kumon for both Math and Reading and helped students with their academic needs.
