The Tumbling Composter is a rotating drum designed to make turning and aerating a compost heap easier, speeding up decomposition. Aeration is essential to composting, since the bacteria responsible for breaking down organic material need oxygen to work effectively, and this design allows the whole compost load to be aerated simply by rolling the drum rather than manually turning it with a tool.[1]
The composter is built from a large plastic drum (such as a repurposed bin or container, holding at least 30 gallons) fitted with a steel tube and threaded rod assembly running through its center, allowing the drum to rotate around its axis when rolled along the ground. Numerous small aeration holes are drilled around the container to allow oxygen to reach the compost inside. Fabrication uses a hacksaw and drill to cut and drill the container, tubing, and rod to size, with ear and eye protection recommended during drilling.[2]
Purpose
The composter is used to break down organic material into a soil conditioner or plant fertilizer, recycling material that would otherwise be treated as waste.
