Silicone sheet is a thin, flexible medical-grade silicone elastomer membrane (typically 1 mm thickness, Shore A 30–80 durometer) used to simulate peritoneum and serosal tissues, providing the distinctive final "pop" sensation during abdominal wall penetration.

Tissues

Tissue Visual Tactile Simulator Notes
Transversalis fascia and peritoneum Partial Yes 1 mm silicone (Shore A 60–70). Layer as final membrane beneath all other materials; provides distinctive "pop" confirming safe peritoneal entry.
Serosal surfaces Yes Yes 1 mm silicone (Shore A 40–50). Use softer durometer for more compliant serosal feel.

Troubleshooting

  • Sheet tears during training — Increase durometer (Shore A 70–80); verify proper support underneath.
  • Loss of "pop" sensation — Clean with mild soap and 70% alcohol; air dry completely.
  • Sheet curls or warps — Store flat away from direct sunlight.

Alternatives

Alternative Best For Trade-offs
Latex sheet Similar elasticity Allergy risks; not suitable for all learners
Felt Fascial "pop" Different texture; earlier layer

Background

Clinical Context for Simulation

[edit source]

The peritoneum is a critical boundary; the "pop" sensation confirms safe entry and correct tissue plane.
