Dried beans are legume seeds used in medical simulation as a small, firm solid body set inside a soft substrate. The documented use is the nodule model in the UGHE Low-Cost Soft-Tissue Simulation Module, where a kidney bean is used instead of lotion to stand in for a solid subcutaneous lesion, and the bean is the lesion the trainee excises.[1] The paper is indexed as DOI 10.1186/s12909-025-07910-4, PMID 41034833 and PMC PMC12487576, is licensed CC BY-NC-ND 4.0, and lists 21 authors led by Wittenberg RE. The nodule model uses the same tissue and skin layers as the abscess model, and the bean cost US$0.03 per model in Rwanda.[1]
