TissueDB/Materials/Coated Fabric

Coated Fabric is the class of sheet materials made of a textile carrying a plastic or rubbery film — a combination of fibres and a film bonded onto them. It covers rexine, vinyl fabric (upholstery vinyl) and faux leather, which is also sold as pleather and leatherette. The line against Plastic Sheet: a coated fabric has fibres under the film; a plastic sheet is film alone. A sheet with no textile backing belongs to Plastic Sheet, and a build that names only "vinyl" without saying whether it has a backing stays there until its source says otherwise — the backing is not inferred from a photograph. Sold as: rexine, vinyl fabric, upholstery vinyl, faux leather, pleather, leatherette, artificial or synthetic leather — from fabric, upholstery and craft suppliers, by the yard or metre off a roll. Work it by cutting to size with scissors or a rotary cutter and wrapping or gluing it over a form; the one published build on this page covers a foam block with rexine and hinges it so the block opens like a book. Uncoated cloth is a separate class: plain woven and knitted textile with no film on it belongs to Cloth, Woven or Cloth, Knitted.

Skin			Lumbar Laminectomy and Dural Closure Simulator (Bakhshi)	As rexine covering a book-fold foam block: two foam components are covered with rexine and hinged so the block opens like a book, the lower half leaving space for the saw-bone spine model and the upper half carrying a slit-like opening that represents the incision. The trainee enters through the pre-cut slit rather than incising the cover. The source names the material only as rexine over foam; it states neither how the cover is fixed to the foam nor any dimension for it.^[1] The foam block underneath is Foam, soft.

Troubleshooting

Incising the cover — The one published build does not ask the trainee to cut the coated fabric: the slit is pre-cut into the block during assembly. Where a build needs the cover to be incised, test that on an offcut before the session rather than during it.
Fixing the cover to its form — The source does not state how the rexine is attached to the foam, so no adhesive is recommended here. Test the bond on an offcut of the same foam, because a film-faced fabric and a foam block take glue differently from two porous surfaces.
