This guide documents field techniques for repairing and repurposing damaged solar panels, developed during the Caribbean hurricane response. It covers how to select salvageable panels, test panel circuitry and polarity using a multimeter, and seal cracked or debris-covered panel surfaces with clear tape to restore safe use.

The guide also explains how to charge a battery from solar panels both with and without a dedicated solar charge controller. In the absence of a charge controller, which was often unavailable during the crisis response, it describes manually monitoring panel and battery voltage, and using opaque black plastic bags to partially block panel cells and prevent overcharging when panel output voltage is too high. It concludes with basic guidance for connecting a charged battery to an inverter to build a functional power hub.

Note: This guide involves working with unregulated voltage and battery charging without a manufacturer-standard charge controller. It should be treated as an emergency field technique rather than best practice, and used with appropriate caution around battery safety (overcharging, ventilation, short-circuit risk).
