Exploratory laparotomy with peritoneal lavage is a life-saving emergency procedure performed in children with generalized peritonitis, most commonly due to gastrointestinal perforation, advanced appendicitis, necrotizing infection, or abdominal trauma.
The procedure involves:
- Gaining safe access to the abdominal cavity
- Identifying and controlling the source of contamination when possible
- Evacuating purulent or feculent material
- Thorough but judicious peritoneal lavage
- Establishing conditions for recovery or referral
Within the SELF module, the procedure is taught not as a single technical act, but as a sequence of critical decisions and actions under time pressure, uncertainty, and limited resources.
