Community innovation found in the Río Mar Community , Puerto de la Libertad, La Libertad. It consists of using a cloth handkerchief to filter the water that is going to be consumed.

General information

The Río Mar community is located in the municipality of Puerto de La Libertad, La Libertad, El Salvador. This community is characterized by having, through residential pipes, periodic access to water throughout the day. However, according to its inhabitants, the water is not suitable for human consumption because it generally contains dirt, and sometimes it is even yellowish.

Most families choose to buy drinking water, however, this weekly expense represents a very large impact, and many people choose to use other filtration methods, such as water chlorination or boiling.

Community solution

The solution found in this community responds to the need to purify and make the water drinkable before consuming it. The creator of the solution is called José, he is the father of a family with two sons and a daughter, and his objective is to take care of the health of his family, so, when he saw that the water arrived with dirt or larvae, he was The idea occurred to use some type of filter that could "catch" the dirt, and give way to clean water ready to use or consume.

The water filter consists of a handkerchief or piece of cloth, which is used to clean the water used in the home. This water is used for drinking, cooking and washing fruits and vegetables.

Materials

The materials are only a cloth handkerchief (which is only used for that reason) and a clean container to store the filtered water.
