About the challenge

[edit | edit source]

In large group meetings the usual format is for most of those present to be passive, while a few do the talking. Though this might be appropriate at times, more often the collective creativity is stifled. Also, we tend not to be aware of how our daily conversations structure and form the collective reality we live in. Through language, through conversations, we build our common understanding of what is happening and open up possibilities for the future.

Description

[edit | edit source]

World Café’s invite participants to enter an atmosphere of relaxation and vibrant exchange with others from a variety of backgrounds. We tend to prefer having conversations with those who move in similar circles. Interestingly enough, it is precisely when we invite diversity and engage in multi-stakeholder dialogues that innovative approaches may arise. The setting is organised around café-tables, preferably with white paper tablecloths that may be used for doodling and scribbling down ideas. 4-5 participants gather around each table to discuss a question prepared by the facilitators.

After each round (lasting for anything from 20 – 45 min), one host remains at each table, while all others swarm off into new constellations. A cross-pollination of ideas takes place. Usually, after three rounds, participants are asked to share the inspiration they have come up with. This simple method allows for fruitful conversations to take place in very large groups (up to a few hundred). New common interests may crystallise and action points developed.
