About the challenge

[edit | edit source]

Many remote areas in Palestine are not connected to the electricity grid. Due to the ongoing Israeli occupation, many communities in remote areas and areas close to the segregation wall find themselves lacking basic services such as clean drinking water and electricity. Due to the lack of political decision making, these communities cannot be connected to the grid and thus require alternatives to ensure they receive their basic rights to electricity. Providing isolated communities with electricity through stand-alone systems

Description

[edit | edit source]

Many remote communities around the world are lacking basic services of clean water, shelter, health and access to electricity. Rural communities depend on old roman cisterns to get their water and are using minimal technology in their livelihoods. Bedouin communities are also residing in remote areas that lack the proper infrastructure. Today, these communities are living without any safe and reliable electricity source. They depend basically on expensive and polluting electricity generators that usually run on diesel.

To reduce the misery and costs of these communities, solar panels and wind turbines were introduced as alternatives that can guarantee 'free' energy sources for the community. When solar panels and wind turbines were installed, children are able to study at night, households can preserve food in the fridge and communities were better connected to the outside world. This clean technology removes the burden of providing electricity and helps develop the community by allowing it the space, time and money to spend on education, capacity building and community development.

This energy source is also community owned and managed, thus introducing new skills in the community and promoting fair and equal access to basic services.
