Global Ecovillage Network/Solution Library/From poacher to caretaker

About the challenge
[edit | edit source]A Namibian story of how to restore wildlife and engage poachers in the process, by the principle that conservation will fail if it doesn't work to improve the lives of the local communities.
Description
[edit | edit source]This is a story by John Kasoana who explains how poaching developed in Namibia and how poachers later became wildlife caretakers. Official recognition of this role created a sense of ownership, which resulted into flourishing wildlife after it had nearly come down to nil. Three methods were decisive:
- Using traditional ways while being open to new knowledge.
- Focus on holistic solutions - stopping poaching is not the same as catching poachers.
- Create strategic partnerships with governments and business actors.
