Animal leather is not considered a textile material because it cannot produce fibers or be spun. However, it is used for many products considered part of the fashion industry, such as clothing, footwear, handbags, etc.
It is obtained from different animals and the place where this material is processed is called a tannery.
Today, this is a highly controversial material because the animal in question must be killed to obtain it. As an alternative, synthetic leathers that closely mimic the original texture have begun to be marketed. The problem is that these new materials are not biodegradable, and their production is detrimental to the environment. On the other hand, animal-based leather is a completely biodegradable material.
