This page describes the different types of audiences Appropedia currently has as well as potential audiences that are likely to use the wiki. Feel free to make any modifications.

Current[edit | edit source]

This is the audience we already have. Here you will find some ideas on how to understand them as well as some strategies to improve their experience on Appropedia.

Affiliated organizations[edit | edit source]

Organizations are not only creators that bring new valuable content to Appropedia, but also are the ones that support the webpage financially as well as legitimating its content. Our focus could be on:

  • Giving personalized support.
  • Providing visibility (Homepage, related pages).

Some of these organizations can be found in Appropedia:Add_your_organization

Students from affiliated universities[edit | edit source]

These students are the main creators; they are the ones who bring new content regularly. Our focus here could be on:

  • Improving preloads
  • Community building actions such as:
    • Encouraging comment pages
    • Encouraging contributions between projects
    • Encouraging contributions between universities

Direct traffic[edit | edit source]

These are the top consumers; although as Appropedia's traffic increases, more and more become also creators and editors. Our focus could be on developing strategies to retain and involve them.

Top users[edit | edit source]

They are the main editors and they can be found at Appropedia:Top#Users. Many of them are not only specialists on their area, but also have a deep understanding on how Appropedia works and its potential. Our focus here could be on:

  • Asking for feedback on recent changes.
  • Giving personalized support.
  • Giving a special insignia for those who are specialists.
  • Organizing events for community building

Potential[edit | edit source]

This is the audience we should aim at. A lot of work is being done in order to increase and retain it; here you will find some ideas that contribute to that effort.

New organizations[edit | edit source]

Getting new organizations involved will bring all the benefits mentioned in affiliated organizations.

Organic traffic (Google)[edit | edit source]

The best we can do to increase this traffic is:

  • Improve content.
  • SEO
    • Focus on search intent.
    • Aim for keywords with high traffic potential and low keyword difficulty.
    • Strengthen our backlink profile.
  • Develop strategies to retain traffic.

[edit | edit source]

This traffic gives us the opportunity to aim for keywords we aren't able to rank for in organic traffic. Therefore we could invest on keywords that have:

  • High search intent.
  • High keyword difficulty.
  • Low CPC.

Students and teachers from new universities[edit | edit source]

The past has shown the importance of universities on Appropedia. A global reach out to other educational institutions could be made. Our focus could be on:

  • Generating a structure that would be suitable for courses and evaluations.
  • Identifying potential universities.
  • Reach out.

Past students from affiliated universities[edit | edit source]

This audience has a big potential for Appropedia, as many of them are likely to become editors and even top users. Not only they have already went through the experience of creating and editing, but as years passed most of them have become specialists in their areas. Therefore the focus could be put on:

  • Generating a first communication strategy to invite to edit on Appropedia.
    • Communicate the impact of their project/s.
    • Asking to update their project/s.
  • Organize events (for example a a hackathon).
  • Give a special insignia for those who have become specialists.

Door-to-door social media outreach[edit | edit source]

There are lots of people sharing their appropriate technology and sustainability projects on social media and it is really easy to find them with hashtag search. A reach out could be made by sending personalized messages.
