Thermal Pollution is defined as the addition of unwanted heat to the environment, in particular, to natural waters. This is often a problem related to electrical power production (e.g. via nuclear reactors).

The effects of this dumping of unwanted heat will not be visible for sometime.

Some of the problems from this are:

  1. decrease ability of water to hold oxygen
  2. increase rate of chemical reactions
  3. changes in reproduction, behavior, and growth patterns throughout the food chain
  4. long-term damage to the natural bodies of water.
