At home (just 2 people):
Buy:
# Cut 6 sheets at the diagonal: 3 in one direction, 3 in the other direction. (If you want all logos inside, and all shiny outside.)
* 12 4’x8’x1" sheets
# Tape points and bases of the 12 triangles, and the 8’ sides of the rectangles.
* 3"/6" tape
# Make 2 semi-walls, each made of 3 panels: (Logos towards you.)
* cutter and blades
## Place 2 panels with no gap between their 4’ sides, tape them together, fold like a book, and tape “the spine of the book”. We call this a tight hinge.
* gloves and masks
## Place the 3rd panel along the 2nd, with a gap wide as the thickness of a panel, tape them together, fold like a book (with a panel between them to keep the gap), and tape “the spine of the book”. We call this a loose hinge.

## Do the diagonals first, the verticals second.
##  The diagonals have a gap the size of (important) half a panel. Tape, fold, tape the spine.  It's a loose hinge, but remember the gap is _half_ the thickness of a panel.
## The verticals have no gap. Tape, fold, tape the spine. It's a tight hinge.
# For travel: stack the folded 2 semi-walls and the folded 2 semi-roofs, bundle them, place on top of car or inside truck, drive.
# At the Playa: unbundle, tape the semi-walls together, tape the semi-roofs together, put roof on top (with help), tape roof to walls, add strings and pegs, add windows and doors and other niceties, enjoy, separate roof from walls + separate 2 half-roofs + separate 2 half walls, fold, pack, go home.

The following is an attempt to find the words to go along with the pictures and, even better, the video.  Also, to see if I've understood the process correctly.  [[User:LucasG|LucasG]] 14:10, 3 May 2011 (PDT)

Each panel is like a thin book, with front-cover, back-cover and spine.  It's like a landscape, so the spine is the short side of the triangle.
Make 2 semi-roofs, each made of 6 triangles:

You do a set of 3 walls, and then another set of 3 walls. Each set has a tight hinge and a loose hinge.
* Place the 6 triangles as 1 triangle, 2 roof-sides (each is 2 triangles), 1 triangle. (Logos towards you.)

To make a tight hinge:
Top view: triangle (gap) triangle+triangle (gap) triangle+triangle (gap) triangle
* place the two panels flat and aligned on the floor, with the long side of both closer to you, and a short side of one fully touching the short side of the other.  They look like consecutive bricks on a wall, with nothing in between.
* place tape along the line where the panels touch each other.
* fold so that the two panels are now stacked.
* place wide tape to cover simultaneously the spine of both panels.
* unfold again.

To make a loose hinge:
Side view: triangle (gap) triangle+triangle (gap) triangle+triangle (gap) triangle
* place the third panel flat and aligned with the other two, but separated by the thickness of one panel.
* place wide tape along the line where the panels "almost touch" each other.
* temporarily put a panel on top of the second panel, and fold so that the second, the temporary and the third panels are now stacked.
* place wide tape to cover simultaneously the spine of both panels and the piece of tape between them.
* unfold again.

Fold both sets and stack one on top of the other. Those are your 6 walls.
* "Diagonal" = line between triangles in "triangle(gap)triangle".
* "Vertical" = line between triangles in "triangle+triangle".

* Do the diagonals first, the verticals second.

== For travel ==

First, cut 6 panels along the diagonal, to end up with 12 triangles.
Stack the folded 2 semi-walls and the folded 2 semi-roofs, bundle them, place on top of car or inside truck, drive.

Do the following twice:
== At the Playa ==
* place 6 triangles like half a roof: half a side of the pyramid (1 triangle), one side (2 triangles), another side (2 triangles), half a side (1 triangle).  Number those triangles 1 to 6.
* join triangles 1 and 2 with a loose hinge.  (Important: the loose hinges are not "loose by the thickness of one panel", but by the thickness of half a panel.)  Same for triangles 3 and 4.  Same for triangles 5 and 6.
* join triangles 2 and 3 with a tight hinge.  Same for triangles 4 and 5.
* fold.

Fold both sets and stack them together on top of the walls you had stacked earlier.  That's your folded hexayurt.

* Unbundle.
* Unbundle.
* Join walls.
* Tape the semi-walls together.
* Join roof halves.
* Tape the semi-roofs together.
* Place roof on top of walls and tape.
* Put roof on top (with help).
* Fix to the ground.
* Tape roof to walls.
* Add strings and pegs.
* Add windows and doors and other niceties.
* Enjoy.

In short

At the shop

Buy:

  • 12 4’x8’x1" sheets
  • 3"/6" tape
  • cutter and blades
  • gloves and masks

At home

Just two people.

  • Cut 6 sheets at the diagonal: 3 in one direction, 3 in the other direction. (If you want all logos inside, and all shiny outside.)
  • Tape points and bases of the 12 triangles, and the 8’ sides of the rectangles.

Make 2 semi-walls

Make 2 semi-walls, each made of 3 panels: (Logos towards you.)

  • Place 2 panels with no gap between their 4’ sides, tape them together, fold like a book, and tape "the spine of the book". We call this a tight hinge.
  • Place the 3rd panel along the 2nd, with a gap wide as the thickness of a panel, tape them together, fold like a book (with a panel between them to keep the gap), and tape "the spine of the book". We call this a loose hinge.

Make 2 semi-roofs

Make 2 semi-roofs, each made of 6 triangles:

  • Place the 6 triangles as 1 triangle, 2 roof-sides (each is 2 triangles), 1 triangle. (Logos towards you.)

Top view: triangle (gap) triangle+triangle (gap) triangle+triangle (gap) triangle

Side view: triangle (gap) triangle+triangle (gap) triangle+triangle (gap) triangle

  • "Diagonal" = line between triangles in "triangle(gap)triangle".
  • "Vertical" = line between triangles in "triangle+triangle".
  • Do the diagonals first, the verticals second.
  • The diagonals have a gap the size of (important) half a panel. Tape, fold, tape the spine. It's a loose hinge, but remember the gap is _half_ the thickness of a panel.
  • The verticals have no gap. Tape, fold, tape the spine. It's a tight hinge.

For travel

Stack the folded 2 semi-walls and the folded 2 semi-roofs, bundle them, place on top of car or inside truck, drive.

At the Playa

  • Unbundle.
  • Tape the semi-walls together.
  • Tape the semi-roofs together.
  • Put roof on top (with help).
  • Tape roof to walls.
  • Add strings and pegs.
  • Add windows and doors and other niceties.
  • Enjoy.
  • Separate roof from walls.
  • Separate 2 half-roofs.
  • Separate 2 half walls.
  • Fold, pack, go home, store.
