Transportation #1 Carbon Dioxide Source in US

Architect Ed Mazria suggests that these federally determined energy consumption sectors are not useful, and suggests a model contrasting buildings, transportation, and industry (I prefer the term manufacturing). This alternative model suggests that buildings are the largest opportunity in a sustainable climate strategy. Here is an example of how that looks: http://www.worldchanging.com/archives//005005.html unsigned comment by Lyle Solla-Yates, 4 January 2007.

Can we rename from Transportation to Transport?

"Transport" seems simpler more natural to me, and google:sustainable-transport gets 3 times as many results than google:sustainable-transportation. Any objections? --Chriswaterguy · talk 16:55, 18 February 2007 (PST)

I have no objections, as long as we keep Transportation as a redirect. But you will need to check with Aaron, of course (as moderator). It's curious, since I would have thought that Transportation would be the more natural term, but I checked transport/transportation (without sustainable) and got a similar difference. Interestingly, Google treats transport and transportation as synonyms, unless you precede the word with a dash or a plus sign. Also, Wikipedia seems to prefer Transport over Transportation (which redirects to "Penal Transportation", not a phrase I was even aware of. I guess you'll want me to do the move? Use the same namespace as Wikipedia, as eventually all information from here will have to be copied over to there, and it will make it easier to automate the process if we align the namespace. After all, this wiki is part of the GFDL corpus.
I clearly see the value of following Wikipedia's model, but I'm still not sure that "transport" is a better term than "transportation." Transportation is a more common term in the bureaucrat-ese: counties prepare "Regional Transportation Plans," and there are departments of transportation. Check out the google search results for "alternative transport" (388,000 results) and "alternative transportation" (851,000 results). "Alternative transportation," a regrettable term, in my opinion, is frequently used instead of "sustainable transportation."
If most still agree that "transport" would be a better topic category, then I say let's make the change. Transport and transportation in their noun forms are both synonyms, but "transport" can also be used as a verb, an advantage in many respects, but I think that's also what's throwing me off. Very few of the other topic names are in verb form -- gerunds, yes — bicycling, solar cooking, dehydrating, recycling, composting -- and other noun forms like distillation. What if these were changed to "cook with solar," dehydrate, recycle, compost, bicycle, "distill water?" See what I mean?
In conclusion, though, I do believe we should change the topic name to "transport" to follow the wikipedia model, as well as the fact that there are several "Sustainable Transport" institutes, even if this might set up a few minor mental stumbling blocks for me, and a few others for a while. --Aaron 08:31, 20 February 2007 (PST)
