Welcome![edit]

Hi User555,

Welcome to the Appropedia wiki. Please make yourself at home! If you need a general wiki-tutorial, see the main help page (or the more in-depth one on WikiEducator).

Check your preferences and be sure you verify your email address and turn on email notification if you'd like it -- you can find out when your talk page, or any page on your watchlist, is modified. You may want to upload a photo or information about yourself to your userpage (which is at User:User555).

If you have a particular interest or project in mind, go ahead and start it! If you have questions or suggestions, the best place to leave them is at our community discussion page, which we call the Village pump - you should get a fast response. Or, feel free to leave me a note on my talk page if you have further questions, need help finding your way around, have a cool idea for a project, or just want to chat.

Glad to have you here!

-Yuke

Templates[edit]

Hi User555,

I see you're importing a lot of templates... that's a big job - thanks for your efforts!

Now, there is an easier way to import templates in bulk, and automatically import the dependencies (all the other templates used by the first templates you imported). It's still a fair bit of work to do properly (details here: User:Chriswaterguy/Tech/Importing templates with dependencies), and it requires admin privileges for the "import" step, but depending on how many templates you're planning on, it might be worth doing. Let me know!

Btw, are you working with Lonny? --Chriswaterguy 17:29, 13 February 2013 (PST)

no I created my account on here a few days ago User555 02:17, 14 February 2013 (PST)
Okay - interesting. I'm curious what your plans are for the Biography, History and Geography portals - how these would work for Appropedia's focus on sustainable development? thanks --Chriswaterguy 06:30, 15 February 2013 (PST)
ok User555 06:33, 15 February 2013 (PST)

Please can you take more care when you change templates. Changing Template:Notice had the effect of breaking all the notices that were based on it. I have reverted the changes, please can you tell me exactly the benefits of the new changes before reverting it again. Or - alternatively - please return and clean up the mess you make when you change things. Joeturner 06:06, 8 March 2013 (PST)

I will look at page information before changing anything to see if it has alot of website using the template before I change it thanks for telling me User555 03:57, 9 March 2013 (PST)

hi again - would you be able to add a source link (or statement, as appropriate), when adding an image? e.g. File:Evstafiev-afghan-apc-passes-russian.jpg .

That's part of the attribution requirement for CC licenses. thanks again. --Chriswaterguy 06:40, 15 February 2013 (PST)

oh I got it from en wikipedia User555 07:00, 15 February 2013 (PST)

Details re FB & G+ buttons[edit]

Thanks for your comments and code - About coding to add Facebook and google button.

What do you mean by "I've done it on Wikipedia it will work " - did you set up Likes to display on your own account, using your user .css page? Just trying to work out what we need to do for Appropedia. --Chriswaterguy 20:20, 23 February 2013 (PST)

Btw, I replied on the Village Pump re Appropedia on G+ - is that what you mean? --Chriswaterguy 20:37, 23 February 2013 (PST)

ok thanks User555 01:12, 24 February 2013 (PST)
Well I tested the codes on Wikipedia to see if it will work but they doing work on here so I just put a file and out a link with it User555 01:12, 24 February 2013 (PST)
Okay, I need some context to be able to do anything. Where do you put the code? Also re newsletter signup - are you replying to a specific conversation? We've talked about that a few times over the years. We thought about using WordPress, but now I'm thinking of MailChimp. Thanks --Chriswaterguy 21:18, 2 March 2013 (PST)
what I mean is create a code which I could put in the new design of the main page for user to put in there email and sendsout newletter of the week 86.173.149.162 12:04, 3 March 2013 (PST)
Okay - I'm not sure what you mean by the file and link. Can you demonstrate on the redesign page? Thanks--Chriswaterguy 18:11, 7 March 2013 (PST)
what I mean is you know some website you find on google which have a bar which says sign up for newletter I would like to add that to the redisgn main page but I doint know how to code it to get it to work User555 03:56, 9 March 2013 (PST)
Ok - not sure how to do that. We do want to set up newsletter (maybe through MailChimp), but not sure how to add a box to sign up into a wiki page. If you figure it out, let me know. --Chriswaterguy 20:03, 12 March 2013 (PDT)

Portals Broken[edit]

I believe that some of your template edits have created problems for portals. I am trying to fix it now. Please let me know here, if you know which edits caused the problems mentioned at User_talk:Chriswaterguy#Portal_display_errors. --Lonny 21:26, 7 March 2013 (PST)

I doint know which ones but I did edit some templates updating them sorry if it caused broken portals User555 03:51, 9 March 2013 (PST)
Actually, best to be very careful about editing templates, especially where they affect a lot of pages. Changing the parameters used in the {{notice}} template was unnecessary and broke a lot of notices. Check with me or another admin if you want to make significant changes to a template, or any change at all to a widely used template. (User:RichardF and User:Teratornis are the template experts.) --Chriswaterguy 19:05, 9 March 2013 (PST)
hi could you add page information like wikipedia so it is ever for people to check to see if alot of templates are using the template or article please User555 12:49, 13 March 2013 (PDT)

What's the relevance of added pages?[edit]

I've moved the pages about Wikimedia's language committee to A:Incubator. Please don't add pages like this in mainspace - if they were relevant to Appropedia, they'd belong in the "Appropedia:" namespace.

But please explain to me, because I'm confused: what is your intention?

I'm also confused by the "Meta" - see my question at Appropedia talk:Meta.

Until we come to an understanding, please do not copy anything more from Wikimedia sites to Appropedia. Thanks. --Chriswaterguy 20:36, 9 March 2013 (PST)

well it to help Appropedia to decide what languges to add User555 00:39, 10 March 2013 (PST)
These pages contain content specific to Wikimedia projects - to make them useful here will take work. I think it's best if we develop processes here that are relevant to our resources, and which make sense in this context. So I'd rather you didn't copy any more pages from Wikimedia sites.
However, if you really think this is a relevant approach, and want to demonstrate, you could do it in your userspace. Please either leave the existing pages in the Incubator, or move them to your userspace if you prefer. Thanks.
Btw, we'll have a bunch of content in other languages soon, as we're merging with another wiki. --Chriswaterguy 03:22, 10 March 2013 (PDT)
ok could I help by creating some projects and calling them Appropedia:incubator and Appropedia:Meta please User555 03:40, 10 March 2013 (PDT)

Have a break, cool down and explain what you are doing.[edit]

User555, you are now disabled from making any edits to Appropedia for 24 hours. When this block ends on Monday 11 March 2013, you can explain on a new page exactly the changes you are planning to make and the reasons for each one. You will not continue to make changes to the structure, portals and templates of Appropedia without prior discussion. You will listen to the founders of Appropedia and you will answer their questions about the changes you are making without causing them unnecessary extra work.

If there are changes that you feel would make Appropedia a better and more usable space, I'm sure everyone here would be interested to hear about it. But randomly importing substantial structural elements from wikipedia is not acceptable.

I hope you understand the extra work your work this week has caused. I am choosing the believe you are doing this for good reasons, so please take this opportunity to have a break and then come back to explain to use why further changes are necessary. Thanks. Joeturner 06:38, 10 March 2013 (PDT)

thanks sorry for all the disruption I have caused I will discuss bringing template from wikipedia ether with you or another administrator I will also discuss it in village pump. Hi could I undo the edit you did yesterday because it improved the page User555 14:59, 11 March 2013 (PDT)

Redirects and main space[edit]

Please create new experimental pages in the incubator. There's no need for redirects from mainspace until the pages are ready. If you want people to see them, ask on A:VP. Thanks --Chriswaterguy 22:26, 14 March 2013 (PDT)

oh ok next time I want to test a page I will do it in incubator sorry User555 00:21, 15 March 2013 (PDT)
