Welcome, Tahnok!

You probably don't need the wiki advice, but here's our normal greeting:

Welcome![edit source]

Hi Tahnok,

Welcome to the Appropedia wiki. Please make yourself at home! If you need a general wiki-tutorial, see the main help page (or the more in-depth one on WikiEducator).

Check your preferences and be sure you verify your email address and turn on email notification if you'd like it -- you can find out when your talk page, or any page on your watchlist, is modified. You may want to upload a photo or information about yourself to your userpage (which is at User:Tahnok).

If you have a particular interest or project in mind, go ahead and start it! If you have questions or suggestions, the best place to leave them is at our community discussion page, which we call the Village pump - you should get a fast response. Or, feel free to leave me a note on my talk page if you have further questions, need help finding your way around, have a cool idea for a project, or just want to chat.

Glad to have you here!

Internships and volunteering[edit source]

Would be great to have you on board... a very quick intro to our "to-dos" before I hit the sack:

The main priority for me right now is getting a Simple:Press forum set up on our blog, if possible within a week (starting on our dev blog). I'd really like to get cross-login working, using the wiki's user database for logging into the WordPress site (probably with a hidden OpenID backend).

If anything there grabs your attention, it would be great to have your input. Thanks for getting in touch!

Btw, how did you hear about the internships? --Chriswaterguy 18:52, 4 January 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Ummm, a while back I started following the twitter account when I saw a call for internships. Tahnok 01:20, 5 January 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Great to know - good motivation to keep putting news out that way.
Thanks for your userpage link to http://lesswrong.com - reading it and liking it. I also just discovered http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/ but I think I like Less Wrong better. --Chriswaterguy 12:52, 6 January 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm glad you liked lesswrong, it is refreshingly thorough sometimes. I have checked out the todos, but I am not sure how to find things that need to be done. I'd love to help out with the OpenID login thing. I've done a bit of research on it because of a research position I had last summer, but I didn't actually get "dirty" with any implementation. I'd like to index Appropedia's to-do pages as part of indexing the whole site. That might make it easier to determine priorities and help people find where to jump in. At the moment I'm porting a bunch of templates from Wikipedia. See:
Many Appropedians contribute domain knowledge, but not as many are familiar with the technical side of MediaWiki. Thus we accumulate red linksW and other unfinished things on our special pages:
and so on. We need to cultivate a core group of editors who understand how to fix those housekeeping problems, so the site stays organized as the domain experts continue to add their knowledge. --Teratornis 13:00, 3 February 2011 (PST)
Hey Teratornis, I'm just getting started with my internship. If you have any suggestions for things I could be working on I'd be glad to hear them. I am going to start with investigating a mobile skin and the anti-vandal bots. Tahnok 09:02, 2 May 2011 (PDT)

Tech intern program[edit source]

Hi Tahnok,

Quick update: I've set up a Appropedia:Tech Interns, mid-2011. The talk page can be a place to ask for help or suggestions, or just throw around ideas. There are a few people interested in being available to help out, and I'll get them to watch the page, and we'll get some other tech projects happening as well. Munimortal is working on a partner-specific banner for the site.

After talking with Lonny about the kinds of work that interns normally start on, and I made up a modified "tour" idea at Appropedia:Tech Interns, mid-2011/Tour. Some of that you'll have already done (like creating a topic page). The idea is to introduce you to some of the workings of Appropedia, and give you plenty of time to get into a specific project. --Chriswaterguy 23:17, 28 April 2011 (PDT)

Content[edit source]

Hi Tahnok - I just noticed that you'd said you were interested in content internships. While the tech work is our most pressing need, and where you can be the greatest help, we can certainly mix some content work into your program. Let me look into that - are you interested in helping to port some open licensed content to Appropedia, or working on some other aspect? --Chriswaterguy 01:24, 2 May 2011 (PDT)

Heya, I wouldn't mind doing some content porting stuff, but I was also hoping to try and make some new content. A friend and I are going to be making a rooftop garden and I'll be trying to work that into the page on Balcony gardens if I can. Tahnok 17:11, 2 May 2011 (PDT)

AbuseFilter[edit source]

Hi Wesley,

I haven't had time to learn AbuseFilter... I've just been looking at mw:Extension:AbuseFilter/RulesFormat, and it would be a lot easier if I'd ever properly learned to code. Happy to work with you on it, on chat (or maybe on a suitable coders' IRC channel?) but I don't feel like nutting it out by myself.

Are you interested in playing with it? I think you'll be an admin very soon, so permissions should be fine.

One obvious filter would be that if a new user or anon mentions casino or a similar dodgy word, and also includes a url, then that gets blocked. There's probably something like that in Wikipedia's filters already. --Chriswaterguy 04:20, 7 August 2011 (PDT)

Adminship[edit source]

Hi Wesey,

Thank you for all of the excellent work that you do and for taking the offer to be an Appropedia administrator.

Adminship allows you:

  • to officiate and mediate on conflict and requests
  • to edit pages in the MediaWiki namespace
  • to rollback pages
  • to protect and delete pages
  • to block editors
  • to adapt AbuseFilter
  • other special features

You may want to check out some notes from Teratornis at U:TT#ADMIN as well. We also added you as a widget editor. See Appropedia:Widgets for more on that.

Keep up the great work.

Thanks,--Lonny 17:26, 16 August 2011 (PDT)

The filter "Contains an attempt to hide a link" was triggered on this edit - not sure why. --Chriswaterguy 03:47, 2 September 2011 (PDT)

Looks like my filter isn't just looking at added content, but the whole page... Will try to fix that ASAP --07:28, 2 September 2011 (PDT)

Hello Tahnok[edit source]

Hi Tahnok,

I am at 2nd year in computer science, I should complete my source next year :)

I am excited to improve Appropedia, I love the project's propose.

I already work inside Wikipédia, with statistical analysis, users' trends and mediaWiki support.

What can I do to help Appropedia?

[ ]'s Jonas

Thanks[edit source]

Thanks for the spam-fighting. My bad - I placed a bracket in the wrong place when tweaking AbuseFilter #10, and pretty much turned it off outside userspace. Should be fixed now - a reminder to me to do more thorough testing before going live! --Chriswaterguy 08:54, 12 March 2012 (PDT)
