Welcome[edit]

Hi Mel,

Thank you for the fantastic work on the welcomes. On the welcomes your link [http://wiki.laptop.org/go/User:Mchua|OLPC user page]] should read [http://wiki.laptop.org/go/User:Mchua OLPC user page]. I changed it so that the newly welcomed users could find your OLPC user page with ease. I hope you do not mind.

Again thank you for your fantastic work so far. Please let us know if there is something that we can do to help, and feel free to add your welcome to the template namespace if you think that it would work better there. It could be named {{MchuaWelcome}}, or something like that.

Welcome to Appropedia, --Lonny 22:00, 17 August 2007 (PDT)

btw, OLPC:User:Mchua works - it's in our iwm.
iwm... hmm, doesn't look so clear... I think upper case for shortcuts is a better idea after all. --Chriswaterguy · talk 23:55, 3 November 2007 (PDT)

'''How to use this template:''' Type '''[[Welcome]]<!-- WARNING: template loop detected -->''' into the page (for instance, I would type [[Welcome]]<!-- WARNING: template loop detected -->, then hit save. The template magic will do the rest.

Welcome to the Appropedia wiki. Please make yourself at home! If you need a general wiki-tutorial, Wikieducator has some excellent ones.

Check your preferences and be sure you verify your email address and turn on email notification if you'd like it -- you can find out when your talk page, or any page on your watchlist, is modified. You may want to upload a photo or information about yourself to your userpage (which is at http://appropedia.org/User:YourUsername).

If you have a particular interest or project in mind, go ahead and start it! Feel free to leave me a note on my talk page if you have further questions, need help finding your way around, have a cool idea for a project, or just want to chat. You can also call, text, or email me anytime; contact information is on my User:Mchua user page.

Glad to have you here!

-Mchua

Bots...[edit]

Appropedia:Bots is all we have on these friendly little critters. Work an a policy is welcome, but not urgent. --Chriswaterguy · talk 21:52, 9 March 2008 (PDT)

Community discussion template[edit]

We are the [ Appropedia ] community and we are [ Working in Public ] [ add your entry ]

This was worth a try, but time to declare the experiment over. No one else used it, and it's time to try something else. See conversation at User talk:Lonny#Forum.

I believe we need to try plain old, simple, user-friendly forum software, as we've been discussing internally (options at Appropedia:Forum), plus our Bettermeans workstream for task management, and possibly have a Contributors' homepage as more of a jumping off point for "how to contribute and where to discuss". --Chriswaterguy 21:51, 7 April 2011 (PDT)

  • There has been a dramatic improvement in the guinea worm situation in Sudan. Since the end of the war there has been "a revamped government-led project distributing vital barriers against the disease. These include more than one million pipe filters and nearly half a million cloth filters."Fighting the 'fiery serpent' in Sudan, abc.net.au, Jun 6, 2008 --Chriswaterguy 16:43, 9 June 2008 (PDT)
  • We want a channel somewhere for people to add tidbits of content they don't have time to explore in a full article. ideally with an RSS feed, that people could watch, and that could be sent via twitterfeed to a community account. The Appropedia forum could be best for that once it's going. I'll do it here for now, starting with a good news story from Sudan. --Chriswaterguy 16:43, 9 June 2008 (PDT)
  • I see that AboutUs doesn't use this "WikiBox" on their user talk page, and I think that's wise - otherwise people may go to their task page, read the box, and not notice the personal messages below it. Best for community pages, and optionally for user pages. --Chriswaterguy · talk 18:53, 13 March 2008 (PDT)
    • I like "Community discussion box" - WikBoxsounds more generic. --Chriswaterguy · talk 19:05, 13 March 2008 (PDT)
  • Hi Chris, glad you find this idea interesting. I came up with it with a few people 4 months ago and am pretty excited by it. If you haven't seen http://aboutus.org/WikiBox - check out some of the thought. Would love to talk more about how I see it being used. Best, MarkDilley
    • Looks like a major boost to communication among the whole community, which has been a weakness of wikis till now. --Chriswaterguy · talk 18:53, 13 March 2008 (PDT)
  • One of the ideas we've had for this at AboutUs.org is that there would be many WikiBoxes for different communities on the site, and that people could transclude them on their personal pages, whichever ones they wanted, so each person would have their own personal dashboard, and not have to remember to go check different places. Kind of like an RSS reader for blogs, except more wiki. :-) -- TedErnst 06:18, 13 March 2008 (PDT)
  • Newer threads start on top. (This could get confusing - a good reason to try a now talk page format, perhaps.) --Chriswaterguy · talk 19:47, 12 March 2008 (PDT)
    • As always, comments need headers or something else to give structure. At AboutUs they use bullets (like I've done here - that makes line spacing more regular as well). Another possibility is a new Talk page format.--Chriswaterguy · talk 19:47, 12 March 2008 (PDT)

Community discussion template[edit]

Trying out a new template, {{working in public}} - looks nifty. --Chriswaterguy · talk 19:00, 12 March 2008 (PDT)

It's working... do we want to use it on Appropedia, on our talk pages and relevant community pages? --Chriswaterguy · talk 19:20, 12 March 2008 (PDT)
I should add: I think it could use a lot of adapting for Appropedia, but I wanted to get feedback on the concept.
Probably the page transcluded here should be the Village pump. --Chriswaterguy · talk 19:47, 12 March 2008 (PDT)
Something similar could be done for any of the community discussion pages. --Chriswaterguy · talk 19:47, 12 March 2008 (PDT)
