Academic Background[edit | edit source]

Tierney Craven is a 3rd year undergraduate chemical engineering student at the University of Western Ontario. She is currently working as an undergraduate research assistant to Dr. Joshua M. Pearce in the Free Appropriate Sustainable Technology (FAST) Research Group.

In the summer of 2019, Tierney attended Shad Canada, a one-month STEM and business program, at the University of New Brunswick. Here, she attended lectures on a multitude of subjects from business to medicine. Throughout the program participants were tasked to create a business that would help Canadians impact fully reduce waste in their lives. She, along with her group, created a business that sold a device that attached to washing machines to filter out micro plastics and stop them from reaching wastewater systems or oceans.

Current Research[edit | edit source]

In the FAST group, Tierney is currently developing a 3D printed open source water filter as well as an open source water testing device. She has also built a 3D printed microscope that was used to do particle sizing within protein powders.
