Content adaptation is...
Considerations[edit | edit source]
- More than copy and pasting content
- Goals of skill training are different than knowledge acquisition
Consider the skill being taught[edit | edit source]
- What will they be able to perform?
- Under what circumstances?
- Is it relevant to a practical context
Repurposing the material from knowledge to skill[edit | edit source]
- Redefine the material in terms of skill units
- Express what will the practitioner be able to perform
- Use reading material as supporting the acquisition of the skill. The goal is not to memorize the materials.
- Granularity
Steps to adapt[edit | edit source]
Simulators[edit | edit source]
- Self-assessment instructions
- How to build the physical simulator
- Maintenance
What is the learning environment[edit | edit source]
- Time and space for practicing
- What equipment is required to perform the procedure
- Calibrating and troubleshooting the simulator
- Setup to record a practice
Assessment[edit | edit source]
- Provide a description of the correct way of performing a procedure.
- Point at what mistakes to avoid, how and when to avoid them.
- Provide instructions to correct errors that involve the preparation before performing a procedure (e.g. calibrating equipment), during (e.g. making an incision) and after (e.g. material disposal)
Feedback[edit | edit source]
- Instantaneous feedback using a physical simulator or a quiz
- Self-assessed and following a set of written instructions
- Provided by colleagues or an instructor over a recording
- Instruct how to use the feedback to correct the practice.
