My name is Alexis Grant, I'm currently a junior at Humboldt State University in Northern California Humboldt State University Majoring in Sociology and minoring in Public Relations and Social Advocacy.
Over the past few years I have been participating in various community service activities including an AmeriCorps national service program. Prior to moving to Humboldt County in August of 2010 I volunteered with at-risk youth. I am currently involved with the sociology club at HSU. My role in the club is to lead outreach and media activities, assist in planning events, and serve as a connector with the clubs office.
My two years in AmeriCorps and my other current volunteer experience inspired me to further my education, taught me to be a leader in my community, and developed my professional skills. I worked with inner city youth as a mentor/tutor. I learned about social problems in America, and this lit a fire in my heart encouraging me to further my education so that I can continue impacting youth who were like me.
Working with youth and seeing our nation's social problems first hand fueled my decision to choose sociology as a major. I wanted a better understanding of social issues around the globe and the ability, skills, and knowledge to find creative solutions. I plan to graduate with a Bachelors degree in Sociology and continuing my education in Graduate school. My professional and personal life goal is to start my own nonprofit youth center in order to continue to help minority youth succeed.
My favorite page on Appropedia is Greywater Ecuador La lagrima purificadora.
